2016 in review

2016

So 2016 was the year we decided to pair up and start this blog…

Prior to this we had both been reasonably active but on a bit of an adhoc basis, we entered events as and when we felt like it and there was no long term plan… We knew we both wanted to climb a few mountains and would like to try an Ironman event but that was about as far as it went.

Then we climbed Kilimanjaro in March, and we both knew we would like to do more mountains, the seven summits plan began to form.

Then Jenni ran the London Marathon (I have done it previously) we started to look into other marathons and discovered the Abbott 6 Marathon Majors – another goal was formed.

Then we decided we should blog about our experiences whilst working towards these goals… Then some more goals appeared, including some major cycle sportives and Ironman events and the 1Vision2Girls blog was born!

This year we have gone quite someway along the path to achieving our goals. Our 1st summit was done in March this year and we had a fantastic time on Kilimanjaro, we also managed to tag on a bit of a holiday and spend a few days in Zanzibar (we love to travel too so this made a lot of sense).

Upon returning from Africa Jenni began training for the London Marathon in earnest and shortly after the London Marathon we signed up to run the Chicago Marathon in October this year.

We live quite far apart (Southport – near Liverpool, and London) so seeing each other and doing events together can be a bit of a logistical nightmare, but during 2016 we managed to get together to run 2 obstacle course races, we did Zeus and Nuclear races and had great fun challenging ourselves and getting muddy. Training doesn’t always have to be serious, its important to find time to make sure you have some fun as well, and for us the obstacle races provided a fun element.

We also ran the Southport half marathon together in July, completely unplanned on my part. I signed up the night before as I had travelled up to visit Jenni and she was running it the next day.

In September we took part in the Rat Race Coast to Coast, Running, Kayaking and Cycling across the width of Scotland, an amazing experience with brilliant views (but a long drive to get there) and whilst staying in Scotland we happened to be right next to Ben Nevis so of course we used this opportunity to climb another mountain.

In October we flew to Chicago to run the marathon, another mini holiday, a chance to go away together and also become a step closer to our 6 marathon majors goal.

Its tough training so far apart, and I wish we lived closer together so we could run, cycle and swim together. But I guess that’s part of the challenge. The discipline can be hard to find, and even harder to keep, its been easy to lapse a few times and have easier weeks or even months when motivation is low. But having some shared goals definitely helps and we have a hectic calendar of events planned for 2017.

So for us 2016 has been successful. We have started our blog, raced together, travelled together and had a lot of fun in the meantime. We have big plans for the years to come and are looking forward to the challenges and experiences. Thanks for listening to our ramblings in 2016 (telling people our plans helps make sure we stick to them!)and we look forward to bringing you more stories of our crazy adventures in 2017.

Love Helen and Jenni
